Dermatitis: Protecting Operators' Skin During Winter

As the winter season approaches, metalworking operators are at increased risk of developing dermatitis and other skin conditions. The colder, drier air, combined with the use of water-based metalworking fluids, can cause the skin to dry out more quickly, leading to cracks and irritation.

Why Winter is a High-Risk Season

During winter, the skin’s natural barrier function can be compromised due to exposure to cold air and constant handwashing. For operators who handle metalworking fluids daily, this dryness can be exacerbated, leading to heightened sensitivity or allergic reactions to the chemicals in the fluids.

Best Practices to Prevent Dermatitis

  1. Maintain Proper Concentration Control: Ensuring that your metalworking fluid concentrations are within recommended limits helps minimize the risk of skin irritation. Fluids that are too diluted or too concentrated can both contribute to skin problems. Regular monitoring with refractometers can help maintain balance.
  2. Use of Barrier Creams: Encourage operators to apply barrier creams before and after exposure to metalworking fluids. These creams create a protective layer on the skin, preventing irritants from penetrating and keeping moisture locked in.
  3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): In addition to barrier creams, wearing gloves and long sleeves can further protect skin from direct exposure. Make sure that PPE is appropriate for both the type of fluid used and the working environment.

By taking these preventive measures, companies can help protect their operators’ skin during the colder months, reducing the risk of dermatitis and improving overall workplace safety and comfort.
