Are You Ready for AQMD’s RULE 1144?

 

  

Effective January 1, 2010, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) will place new regulations on the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content of Rust Preventive (RP) and Vanishing Oil (VO) products.  How will this affect the metalworking industry?

 

NEW VOC CONTENT LIMITS AS OF JANUARY 1, 2010:

 

  •          Rust Preventives (RP) must have a VOC content of less than 300 grams/liter (until January 1, 2012 when AQMD will revise VOC content requirements for RP’s).

 

  •          Vanishing Oils (VO) must have a VOC contact of less than 50 grams/liter.

 

IMPORTANT DATES:

 

  •          JANUARY 1, 2010 —  RP & VO products exceeding new limits cannot be manufactured in California. RP & VO products manufactured or purchased prior to 1/1/2010 can be sold & used for 6 months (until 6/30/10).

 

  •          JULY 1, 2010 — RP & VO products exceeding new limits cannot be sold or used in California.
